Air Conditioning is not just for Summer, on cold winter days if you are struggling to demist your windscreen, turning on your AC will produce dry warm air to rapidly clear your view. Using your air conditioning during the colder months of the year also ensures the system doesn’t seize up and will continue to work effectively when the temperature starts to warm up.
Keeping your air conditioning system fully charged increases fuel efficiency for if the refrigerant is low the air conditioning system works harder to try to produce cold air, this extra work uses more fuel.
The recommendation of most manufacturers is to have your air conditioning system recharged every two years, even if you don’t use your AC regularly, gas will continue to permeate through the system, subsequently over time reducing the amount of gas in the system.
Recharging the air conditioning system is started with a pressure test to determine gas loss, if the pressure test indicates an issue such as a potential leak, the recharge is aborted. Assuming no faults found, the old refrigerant and any impurities are extracted from the air conditioning unit using a specialist vacuum pump. Next, fresh gas and lubricant is injected back into the air conditioning system as per the volume and type recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
In the event of the procedure having to be stopped, due to issues raised by the initial pressure test, consultation will be made with you as remedial work to the system is likely to be needed. If you decide not to proceed no charges will be made.
A recharge takes approximately 45 minutes and can be performed while you wait.
